NYC’s favorite summertime hotspot is set to get a major facelift.
Dubbed the Coney Island West initiative, the city’s proposal for Brooklyn’s waterfront neighborhood includes 1,500 mixed-income homes, a $42 million renovation to the Abe Stark Sports Center, Riegelmann Boardwalk repairs, infrastructure revamps, and street repairs within a 76,200-square-foot site located at the intersection of Surf Avenue and West 21st Street.
“We are delivering mixed-income affordable housing, investing $42 million to renovate the Abe Stark Sports Center, and making significant improvements across streets, sewers, and the public realm,” Mayor Eric Adams said on February 20th. “Coney Island’s best days still lie ahead. Today, we started the next chapter in its bright future.”
While the neighborhood buzzes during the summer, it can feel kind of quiet once the colder months swoop in. This plan attempts to revitalize the neighborhood, bring in people year-round, and help Coney Island weather storms without experiencing any significant damages.
“These improvements to the iconic Riegelmann Boardwalk and the Abe Stark Sports Center will help ensure that New Yorkers and visitors can enjoy all that Coney Island has to offer for generations to come, reaping the mental and physical health benefits of time outdoors,” NYC Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Sue Donoghue said in a statement.
While the proposed Coney Island Casino has received major backlash from the local community board, it seems as though the area is more welcoming of the forthcoming Coney Island West proposals.
