Grab your babkas and bagels while you can: Gertie, Williamsburg’s beloved “Jew-ish” diner, is closing in roughly three weeks.
An Instagram post from the NYC staple went live on May 23rd, sharing the news that Sunday, June 15th, is the final day to swing by for some comfort food.
“We’ve celebrated many a birthday and baby shower, intimate weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs, and everything in between,” the restaurant revealed in its post. “We have so loved being part of this little corner of Williamsburg. Being able to share our space with you all over these past six years has been an honor. We are humbled and so grateful for what you’ve helped us create.”
Gertie, Williamsburg’s beloved “Jew-ish” diner, is closing
Staying afloat in the neighborhood’s culinary scene has proved to be a challenge. Just last weekend, the viral Buddies Coffee shuttered — though its owner plans to reopen elsewhere — and the iconic Marlow & Sons closed this spring after 21 years in business.
Despite the challenges that come along with running a restaurant in Williamsburg, the team behind Gertie has been delighted to call their corner of Marcy and Grand home.
“When we opened in 2019, we were so excited to be a part of the Williamsburg community,” the post noted. “When COVID hit a year later, we pivoted quickly and stayed open throughout the pandemic, operating as a soup kitchen and community hub, cooking thousands of meals for our fellow hospitality workers & New Yorkers in need.”
If this news has made you lose your appetite, and understandably so, fear not: it might be the end of the current storefront, but not the end of the business.
“This is a season finale, not a series finale. We’re scouting new spots closer to our sister restaurant @gertrudesnyc so STAY TUNED for future GERTIE 2.0 announcements,” the post concluded.
Co-founders Nate Adler and Rachel Jackson are on the hunt for a new home, likely near their Jewish-American bistro, Gertrude’s, in Prospect Heights. Details have yet to be confirmed, but we’ll keep you in the loop.
In the meantime, stop by 357 Grand St until June 15th. See you there!
