News of Marlow & Sons closing took over feeds on Monday, March 31st, saddening NYC foodies across the five boroughs and leaving them scrambling to snag one final bite.
The Williamsburg eatery revealed that Sunday, April 6th will be its final day in business after 21 years.
“Originally conceived as a grocery store where you could get oysters and a drink, coffee and get caught up on local gossip, it became a place for everything and anyone,” the business wrote on Instagram on Monday. “For 21 years the most talented people have been attracted to our little corner in south Williamsburg and built a community here. Thank you to everyone who has ever walked through the door. We’re closing this chapter with the best memories and love for all.”
Part grocery store, part dining experience, and an Instagram feast for the eyes, the rustic outpost was is brainchild of Tarlow and Mark Firth, who opened the biz in 2004. Ultimately, the go-to spot became part of a larger empire that also included popular locales like the Diner.
Overall, this remains an odd time for restaurants in Brooklyn, particularly in Williamsburg. A small woman-owned coffeeshop on Grand Street, Buddies Coffee, saw an outpouring of love from the community (and celebrities) who rallied to line up and save the spot that owner faced losing due to high rents.
“This is gentrification…I’ve been doing it for four years now…I’m one of the only newest Puerto Rican-owned businesses…and today I just got word that I might not be able to stay in the same lease because of rent increase, which is the reality for so many people,” owner Rachel Nieves wrote on Instagram.
Across the way in Carroll Gardens, Ferdinando’s abruptly closed after generations have been frequenting the spot for 121 years. Though a local neighbor decided to step in for its revival, it was definitely a shock to the community.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, our family has made the decision to permanently cease the operation of Ferdinando’s. It was a decision that was both difficult and painful. But nonetheless necessary. Rendering a 121-year institution such as ours a fond memory cannot come without a mix of emotions,” the family-owned business wrote on Instagram on February 23rd.
As for Marlow & Sons, the locale will be open from 8am to 4pm until Sunday, April 6th. Head there before the grand finale.
