Happy spring…right? Considering the NYC area’s freeze warning for tonight, April 8th, you might think Mother Nature decided to revert back to winter. (We hope you didn’t put those black puffer coats away just yet.)
Though we just experienced our first 70-degree day of the season in late March, it appears we’re taking quite a big step back temperature-wise — and that’s including the largest one-hour temperature drop two weeks ago that broke records. Between gusts of wind up to 45 miles per hour and temperatures in the mid-40s, we can actually expect it to feel 10 degrees cooler. (Yikes, 30s are cold!) Wind chills will near the 20s and teens by dawn. The only positive thing we have going for us are the sunny skies.
Fair warning: get all of your errands done now because you’re not going to want to be out once the sun goes down.
What does a freeze warning mean?
A freeze warning indicates that the cold temperatures, typically below 32°F, are widespread and unexpected. Per the National Weather Service, a freeze warning is issued in the spring at the start of the growing season (when it is late enough to cause damage to new plants and crops). If you have a green thumb and are concerned about those plants on your rooftop, now is the time to take action.
In NYC, a freeze warning indicates a code blue. On April 8th, this will go into effect at 4pm and last into the early hours of Wednesday, April 9th.
The New York City weather for the remainder of the week is a mix of partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-40s. We’re likely to experience some rain towards the end of the week, possibly Thursday to Sunday. Should anything change, we will of course keep you posted.
We apologize that we are interrupting cherry blossom season and tulip festivals with news of cold snaps. Stay warm and cross your fingers underneath your mittens that we’ll eventually get blue skies, high temperatures, and permission to leave the winter coat in the closet.
