Though we wish they lasted longer, these bouts of warm weather we’ve been having have been enough to put us in full spring mode, but that’s not the only thing alerting us that the long-awaited season has finally arrived–a stunning full pink moon is expected to illuminate NYC’s skies this weekend, and it’s our sign to fully welcome spring! Here’s what you need to know:
What is a full pink moon?
The pink full moon, otherwise known as the Paschal Moon, marks the first full moon of spring. The moon also determines what date Easter will fall on each year.
When is the full pink moon occurring?
It will make its way into the sky on Saturday, April 12th, 2025, and is expected to reach peak illumination at 8:22 pm ET, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
Will the full pink moon actually look pink?
Contrary to its name, the moon sadly won’t actually look pink–at least not the shade of pink you’re likely imagining–though it will take on beautiful golden hue if you catch a glimpse of it right when it rises above the horizon, and it will make for a stunning view nonetheless.

Where does the pink moon get its name?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac writes that it “draws its full moon names from various sources, including Native American, Colonial American, and European traditions. Traditionally, these names refer not just to the full Moon but to the entire lunar month in which it occurs.”
As for the name “Pink Moon” specifically, it comes from the early spring bloom of a wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox. Often called “moss pink,” the flower was in full bloom around April’s full Moon.
How can I see the full pink moon?
If you’re interested in catching a glimpse of this moon shining bright, your best bet is to find an open area, such as one of NYC’s many parks or beaches, and watch as the moon rises just above the horizon, at which point it will appear its biggest.
Just be sure if you’re planning to view it outdoors that you bundle up–NYC is going to be colder than Siberia this weekend!
When will the next full moon be?
After the full pink moon, the next full moon won’t rise until May 12th, 2025, better known as the full Flower Moon.
