Each summer we like to frolic around the city and get down, but we didn’t realize how much we’d have the opportunity to get down…ward dog! Between Bryant Park’s free yoga classes, Times Square’s all-day free outdoor yoga event to celebrate the summer solstice, and weekly yoga atop the highest observation deck in the Western Hemisphere, there’s plenty of opportunity to find some zen in the midst of the city’s chaos–but there’s more where that came from!
This weekend, on Saturday, June 21st, Grand Central’s iconic Vanderbilt Hall will be totally transformed into the ultimate yoga studio in celebration of the International Day of Yoga. Even more–the classes are totally free!
For one day only, Grand Central Terminal is inviting yogis of all ages and levels to a day of exciting fitness activities! Kid’s fitness and children’s yoga will begin at 11 am, hosted by the talented and fitness certified Adriana Zito who has 15+ years of teaching experience.
Then, they’ll switch gears towards the adults, with two energy empowering yoga sessions being held by Killer Bodies NYC at 12 pm and 1 pm. No equipment is needed–just bring water and a towel.
The event is part of the MTA’s “A Grand Summer” series, which brings a mix of free and ticketed events across a variety of categories–including book clubs, children’s events, fitness activities, and stand-up comedy–to New Yorkers throughout the summer. MTA Chief Real Estate Transactions and Operations Officer David Florio stated:
We are very excited to bring a first-of-its-kind series of summer events to Grand Central, providing the public an opportunity to enjoy one of the most iconic spaces in New York City, and quite frankly – the world…Grand Central is a perfect space to bring people together – and complemented with new restaurant openings, Grand Central is further solidifying its reputation for premier dining and shopping.
Metro-North Railroad President Justin Vonashek added, “This summer, we’re offering a bit more with the summer series events, taking full advantage of this historic public space to build community in response to requests last year when Grand Central Terminal’s debut in the city’s Summer Streets program became a crowd favorite.”
