Today, April 15 Governor Cuomo announced that all New Yorkers would be required to wear a face covering when in public.
“I am issuing an Executive Order today that all people MUST wear a mask or face covering in public in situations where social distancing is not possible,” he said on Twitter.
“For example, if you are riding on public transit where it is impossible to maintain social distancing, or walking on a busy sidewalk, you must wear a face covering like a bandana or a mask.”
Back on April 3, Mayor de Blasio had said the city was recommending that all New Yorkers wear some kind of face covering when they are outdoors, and earlier today asked grocery stores and supermarkets to require customers to do so, but now the Governor has made it an official regulation.
Both leaders have previously said that surgical masks/N95 masks should be solely for medical workers, and a face covering could be anything from a scarf, bandana or anything made at home.
