Brooklyn‘s best are continuously making their way over the river, opening up shops in Manhattan. From L’Appartement 4F to Win Son, and now Edith’s, Manhattanites can get a taste of iconic Brooklyn establishments in their own borough.
Edith’s began as a pandemic pop-up by Elyssa Heller at Greenpoint’s Paulie Gee’s Pizeria. One year later in 2021, Edith’s opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Williamsburg.
Elyssa named her sandwich counter after her great-aunt Edith who ran a Brooklyn deli in the 1950s. In addition to looking far and wide across generations of Jewish cuisine, Elyssa also took inspiration from her great-aunt’s recipes to curate the menu.
The sandwich counter increasingly grew attention from its innovative items you can’t find anywhere else. It’s classics such as the BEC&L, a baconeggandcheese with a latke that was named a defining sandwich of NYC by the New York Times, and the Totkes, tater-tot latkes are sure standouts.
Howevever, if we had to choose what we’re most excited about being available in Manhattan, it’s the Iced Cafe Slushie. Made with tahini, frozen cold brew and oat milk, we can simply sip this every day and never grow bored of it.
You can explore the full menu at their Manhattan location at 64 Charles Street. The adorable interior radiates nostalgia, with its old-fashioned sandwich counter where you can belly up and start your morning with a fresh cup of coffee. Yes, we get hot coffee and the Iced Cafe Slushie when we go.
If everything on the menu sounds good (because it is) but you want to narrow it down, another favorite of ours is the Sephardi. It’s made on malawich with chicken sausage, cheesy eggs, pickled chili peppers, harissa mayo and herbs. However, we could never pass up the Leo, which is smoked salmon, an omelette, caramelized onions, cream cheese and chives on a bagel.
