In just a couple of months on April 8, 2024, a super rare total solar eclipse will blanket much of western and upstate New York in total darkness, and this airline is giving viewers a front row seat!
Delta Air Lines has added some special flights to their schedule that will fly directly within the eclipse’s path of totality–the locations where the moon’s shadow completely covers the sun, thus blanketing that area in complete darkness–specifically to give passengers an up-close view of the spectacle.
According to NASA, the eclipse’s path of totality will begin in Texas and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Delta will fly an A200-300 aircraft, which features extra-large windows, from Detroit (DTW) to White Plains, New York (HPN), on Monday, on April 8th, departing at 2:59 pm EST.
As of Friday, February 23rd at 12:30pm, flights are sold out for basic seating. Flights in the main cabin, Comfort+, and first class are still available starting at $449. View available seats here.
This April’s total solar eclipse is the last one North America will experience until August 2044, so you definitely won’t want to miss it–especially when you can have the ultimate front-row seat!
Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines lead meteorologist, stated:
The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044. This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.
Be sure to come prepared with your solar eclipse viewing glasses!
If you can’t make it on the flight, NASA and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation have partnered for special eclipse festivities the week of the event! You can learn more about these here.
