Zwischen dem Central und dem Bryant Park wird die Fifth Avenue neu gestaltet. Bürgermeister Eric Adams und die Future of Fifth Avenue Partnership haben vor kurzem Pläne vorgestellt, um die ikonische Straße in einen „Weltklasse-Fußgängerboulevard“ zu verwandeln.
Die Neugestaltung wird sich an anderen berühmten Einkaufsstraßen wie der Champs Elysees, der Ginza, der Oxford und Regent Street in London und der Calle Serrano orientieren.
Zu den Höhepunkten des Projekts gehören die Verbreiterung der Bürgersteige der Fifth Avenue um 46 %, die Verkürzung der Fußgängerüberwege für sicherere Kreuzungen, die Verringerung der Fahrspuren von fünf auf drei sowie ästhetische Verbesserungen, darunter 230 neue Bäume und 20.000 Quadratmeter Pflanzkübel. Dies ist die erste umfassende Neugestaltung der Fifth Avenue in ihrer 200-jährigen Geschichte.
„Die New Yorkerinnen und New Yorker verdienen einen Prachtboulevard, der sich mit dem Rest der Welt messen kann – und gemeinsam mit der Future of Fifth Partnership werden wir genau das erreichen“, so Bürgermeister Adams.
Fußgänger machen 70 % der Menschen auf der Fifth Avenue aus, können aber nur weniger als die Hälfte der Straße nutzen. Während der Feiertage können das bis zu 23.000 Menschen sein, die sich stündlich auf den Gehwegen der Fifth Avenue drängen. Die Future of Fifth Avenue Partnership will dieses Problem lösen, indem sie die Fläche der Bürgersteige fast verdoppelt und den jahrhundertealten Trend umkehrt, Autos den Vorrang zu geben“.
Die neuen Bürgersteige werden 33,5 Fuß breit sein, statt wie bisher 23 Fuß. Dadurch erhalten die Fußgänger eine ungehinderte Gehfläche von 25 Fuß.
„Durch die Verbreiterung der Bürgersteige können wir diese Straße in einen ikonischen Boulevard verwandeln, einen Ort für alle, zu jeder Zeit und vor allem für Fußgänger – die sich nun sicher auf den Bürgersteigen aufhalten können, anstatt sich durch die Autos zu navigieren, um an ihnen vorbeizukommen oder sie zu durchqueren“, so die stellvertretende Bürgermeisterin für Operationen, Meera Joshi.
Diese entscheidenden Verbesserungen an der Fifth Avenue werden nicht nur mehr als die derzeitigen 313.000 direkten und indirekten Arbeitsplätze schaffen, sondern auch den Wirtschaftsmotor des Korridors stärken. Darüber hinaus wird sich das Projekt innerhalb von fünf Jahren durch höhere Einnahmen aus der Grund- und Umsatzsteuer selbst tragen.
