Not only is this weekend about to rise all the way up to 60 degrees, but we’re also getting treated to a later sunset and an extra hour of daylight!
Warm weather is finally making its 2026 debut, arriving just in time for the most anticipated clock change of the year.
New Yorkers are about to get that extra hour of evening sunlight we’ve been craving since November.
Daylight Saving Time officially begins this Sunday, March 8, 2026.
While losing an hour of sleep is never the highlight of the week, the trade-off is more than worth it.
When exactly do we “Spring Forward?”
The official switch happens at 2 am on Sunday morning.
Most digital devices like your iPhone, MacBook, and Apple Watch will update automatically.
However, if you still have an analog clock on your wall or a microwave that requires a manual reset, you will want to move those ahead by one hour before you hit the pillow on Saturday night.
What time is sunset on Sunday?
The best part about this shift is the immediate gratification of a later sunset.
On Saturday, the sun will set at a somewhat gloomy 5:53 p.m.
On Sunday, March 8, we catapult into the future with a 6:55 p.m. sunset according to Time and Date.
Why do we still do this?
Despite the annual national debate and various bills that try to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, we’re still very much in the classic “spring forward, fall back” cycle for 2026.
The practice was originally designed to save energy and make better use of natural daylight, and for now, New York is sticking to the schedule.
How to make the most of the extra hour
Since you will be losing an hour of sleep, you might as well spend your Sunday doing something iconic!
It’s a huge weekend for the city beyond just the time change, and we’re sure you’ll want to take advantage of the warm weather.
The Whitney Biennial 2026 officially opens its doors on March 8, and Governors Island is hosting its fifth annual ice sculpture show on Sunday too.
Just remember to set those alarms a little earlier if you have brunch plans.
You don’t want to be the one person showing up an hour late to the table because you forgot the clocks moved. 😅
