Today is National Cheese Fries Day! If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate, look no further than at our list below.
Cheese fries are a favorite among children and adults. I mean, what’s not to love? Who doesn’t love cheese or fries? Putting them together was a genius idea.
The origin of cheese fries has been an age old debate. The two contenders include Don A. Jenkins, who is said to have invented the chili cheese fry, at the age of 16, in Tomball, Texas, and a young fry cook named Austin Ruse who is rumored to be the first to serve the dish while working at Dairy Queen in St. Charles, Missouri. We’ll leave the decision to your discretion.
Whether they were created in Texas or Missouri, cheese fries are a coveted culinary treat in New York City!
Here’s a list of some places for you to run to today to get your cheese fry fix:
1. Shake Shack
Starting this list with a chain restaurant might seem a bit risky but hear us out! Shake Shack was once a standalone spot in NYC and their cheese fries are delicious. While a simple cheese fries order is good enough, Shake Shack also has the option to add bacon, another universal fav! Their side dish is so popular that they even revealed their cheese sauce recipe in 2020!
Whitman’s takes the cheese fry to the next level. Their Blue Cheese Fries are a hit among regulars but it doesn’t end there. For an extra special spin on the classic, they even serve loaded tots with cheese and bacon. Now, are tater tots fries? Debate amongst yourselves!
3. Bill’s Bar & Burger
Bill’s is another spot with numerous locations and for good reason. Their burgers are AMAZING and their cheese fries are a hit.
4, Harlem Shake
This NYC staple was a must for this list. Hit up their Harlem or Brooklyn location for their popular cheese fries! As a bonus, they also have parmesan fries which may not be your typical cheese fries but are quite literally cheese and fries.
5. Blue Collar Burger
Blue Collar Burger has a few locations in Brooklyn and either one would be worth it to travel to. They offer both cheese and chili cheese fries to complement their long list of burgers.
6. Crif Dogs
Crif Dogs is another NYC classic. This Lower East Side hot dog joint might not sell classic cheese fries but their take on cheese-covered tater tots make them more than worth a mention!
