Hazy skies are in the forecast as smoke from the Canadian wildfires is expected to return to NYC tonight, June 27, into tomorrow morning, Wednesday, June 28, according to the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation.
Though NYC won’t experience the apocalyptic, orange haze we saw earlier this month, NYers should be prepared for unhealthy air quality, including “possible elevated levels of fine particulate pollution,” as well as thick surface smoke.
The smoke is expected to be brought our way via winds from a cold front entering Western New York from the northwest.
“As we closely monitor the changing forecast, New Yorkers should be prepared for the potential return of smoke from the Canadian wildfires,” said Governor Hochul. “I encourage everyone to remain vigilant, especially if you are vulnerable to air pollution, stay up to date on the latest information and take steps to protect yourself.”
The exact forecast remains uncertain, but experts are urging New Yorkers to remain vigilant and be on the lookout for potential air quality alerts.
After ranking as having the worst air quality in the world at a point in time earlier this month, New Yorkers were relieved to see clearer skies and breathe cleaner air one it subsided.
The avoid risks brought on by unhealthy air quality, NY State suggests:
- Those in vulnerable groups should avoid exertion outdoors and watch for symptoms when exposed to the outdoors when AQI is greater than 100
- When AQI is greater than 150, all New Yorkers should avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and those in vulnerable groups should avoid exposure to the outdoors
- Those who spend time outdoors when air quality is unhealthy should wear a well-fitting face mask such as an N95 or KN95
