Around 50,000 runners tackled the 26.2-mile stretch across the five boroughs at yesterday’s New York City marathon.
Two course records were even smashed on Sunday: Catherine Debrunner (1:39:32, a course record in the women’s wheelchair divisions) and Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia (2:04:58, a course record in the men’s open divisions).
And though we can’t credit the athletes enough, it’s the thousands of spectators that made the spirit of the day truly tangible. Friends, family and supporters from around the world waited along the route to cheer on the runners with clapping, shouting, and our personal favorite, hysterical signs.
