Are you on the NYC job search and feeling a bit frustrated? You’re definitely not alone.
Whether you’re a recent graduate trying to break into the workforce, navigating a career transition, or simply ready for something new, finding a job can be a challenging process — regardless of location. But in New York, a range of unique factors adds an extra layer of complexity, including the city’s competitive market and fast-paced industries.
In its 2026 “Best Places to Find a Job” report, WalletHub compared 182 U.S. cities using 31 key indicators such as job openings per applicant, employment growth, starting salaries, and other socioeconomic conditions. The cities that ranked at the top included Scottsdale, Arizona; Columbia, Maryland; and Portland, Maine — while some of the largest metropolitan centers, ours included, didn’t crack the top tier.
Our favorite city itself ranked relatively low on many scales, highlighting how tough the competition can be even in one of the world’s most dynamic urban economies.
