This unassuming ramen shop Shaku Ramen perched upon a Flushing street may look like your ordinary spot to slurp down a steaming bowl of ramen, but we should all know by now that in NYC not everything is as it seems, and this ramen shop has a secret.
After filling up on a hot bowl of deliciousness, visitors will find that a trip down a flight of kitchen stairs transports them to an entirely different universe–a hidden Shanghai-style speakeasy.
Appropriately dubbed Below Shaku, the 25-seat speakeasy exudes vintage Golden Age luxury, complete with dim sultry lighting, eye-catching red accents, and black marble walls, according to QNS.
Below Shaku aims to stand out from the speakeasy crowd, and they do so with their cocktail menu.
Mix-your-own fresh fruit soju cocktails are among drinks you can order, served in a teapot filled with your choice of fresh fruits. Those looking to take the more traditional route will find that the menu also offers bottles of sake, including the delicate Uka Junmai Daiginjo and the medium-bodied Sakuragawa FutsuShu Magnum, champagne, and more traditional cocktails.
The luxurious speakeasy effortlessly contrasts the more casual vibe upstairs, making it the perfect one-stop shop for a perfect night out (because why have to travel from the restaurant to the bar when you can just walk right downstairs?!)
Mouthwatering dishes at the above-ground ramen shop include Tempura Enoki, Spam Fingers, Bao Buns, and several variations of ramen, from Tokyo Tonkotsu Ramen and Very Veggie Shoyu Ramen to Kani King Crab Miso Ramen.
Head to Below Shaku after enjoying a meal upstairs Friday-Saturday 8p.m. – 2a.m.
When the speakeasy isn’t open, you can still chow down at Shaku Ramen daily, from 11a.m. to 10p.m.
