It looks like the aurora borealis might pay New Yorkers a visit this evening, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).
After a geomagnetic storm warning was issued on Thursday, February 27th, it’s possible that locations further south in the U.S. might experience the atmospheric phenomenon — the Empire State included.
Although we can’t guarantee the sight will be as stunning as fall’s footage of the Northern Lights over NYC, might as well keep an eye out! Consider it an appetizer to the super-rare seven planet alignment at the end of the week!
Will the aurora borealis be visible in NY tonight?
Sight-seers in New York who are a distance from the city — a high vantage point away from light pollution, per NOAA — could catch the northern lights around midnight tonight, likely several hours before and/or after.
Although Canada is likely to see the spectacle most vividly, areas below the border could also catch the spectacle from Northern Washington to Maine.
