If you missed the opportunity to catch the Northern Lights over NYC last year, don’t fret because the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has an aurora dashboard that tracks the likelihood of seeing the spectacle in your area, so you’ll always stay up to date on your chances.
Unfortunately, the current aurora forecast shows no chance of the Northern Lights being visible over NYC skies today and tomorrow. However, you can still marvel at the incredible phenomenon thanks to NASA astronaut, Don Pettit, who shared a video to X of what the Northern Lights look like from space.
The astonishing video was posted on January 6th, 2025. Pettit did not disclose in the post where exactly in space he had taken the video.
Pettit was first selected to be an astronaut by NASA in 1996. He has since journeyed on three space flights. Pettit is currently in space at the International Space Station working as a flight engineer and member of the Expedition 72 crew.
Though space tourism isn’t yet up and running, who knows, maybe one day people won’t just be traveling to Alaska or Norway to catch the Northern Lights, but making a trip to space. Until then, we’ll keep admiring Pettit’s video.
