The nation’s fastest train, Amtrak’s Acela, is gearing up to release its NextGen trains as soon as spring 2025.
In order to make the new high-speed trains a reality, Amtrak has partnered with global rail operator, Alstom. The trainsets are in part of a $2.45 billion contract to enhance the Northeast Corridor (NEC) and expand Acela service that’s transported nearly 67.3 million passengers since debuting in 2000. Already, the project has generated more than 1,300 jobs in cites all across the country.
The NextGen Acela trains will travel at a maximum speed of 160 mph—10 mph faster than the current fleet of Acela trains. Beyond the speed, other modernizations to the new fleet include better technology, comfort, and safety. In fact, NextGen Acela trains will be Amtrak’s most environmentally sustainable fleet in existence.
This trainset has 25% more seats, sizable restrooms with touchless features, personal outlets, and sophisticated onboard information systems. You can explore more images of the interior now.
Though the NextGen Acela trains will revolutionize travel on the NEC, the project has met many obstacles along the way. Outdated rail infrastructure has already delayed their launch, which was originally supposed to hit tracks in 2021/2022. However, Amtrak is taking pride in the fact that the trainsets are built with 95% domestic components.
