Amtrak’s long-awaited NextGen Acela, the fastest train in America, is finally ready for passengers. The company confirmed the high-speed service will officially begin running on the Northeast Corridor this Thursday, August 28th, 2025—a new chapter for travel between NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
A New Standard for High-Speed Rail
Built by international rail leader Alstom, the $2 billion NextGen Acela project isn’t just about going faster—it’s about transforming how Americans move along the East Coast.
With top speeds of 160 mph and a modern tilting system for smoother curves, the ride is designed to be both faster and more comfortable.
Five brand-new trainsets will begin service this week, with the full 28-train fleet scheduled to roll out through 2027.

What It Means for New Yorkers
Departing Penn Station will feel very different from now on. Whether you’re a weekday commuter or planning a weekend trip, the NextGen Acela makes travel simpler and sleeker.
Think of ordering a coffee at the upgraded Café Acela, plugging in at your personal power outlet, and streaming over free 5G-enabled Wi-Fi—all while enjoying 27% more seating capacity than before. As Amtrak President Roger Harris put it:
More than a new train — it’s an evolution of travel…history will be made.
The Route, Stop by Stop
Amtrak confirmed the new Acela service will cover the full Northeast Corridor with major stops at:
- New York, NY
- Boston, MA
- Providence, RI
- New Haven, CT
- Stamford, CT
- Philadelphia, PA
- Baltimore, MD
- Washington, D.C.
The result: high-speed, direct connections between the biggest cities in the Northeast—making it a serious alternative to short-haul flights and long drives.
