The TCS New York City Marathon kicks off this Sunday, November 1. One runner is guaranteeing her own crowd support.
Molly Markhoff, a 25-year-old New Yorker, is taking an unconventional approach to the race. She wants a dedicated cheering squad along the 26.2-mile route.
To make it happen, she is hiring locals through Airtasker.
Getting paid to cheer
Molly is offering up to 20 New York taskers $120 each. They just need to show up along the marathon route and cheer her on.
For this race, she specifically asks taskers to bring positive energy and creative signs.
They will motivate her all the way to the finish line.
Right now, it looks like she has chosen the people to do it, but she could need more last-minute supporters to push her to the finish line.

A growing fitness trend
This request is part of a bigger movement. According to Airtasker, they have seen a 280% increase in requests for fitness accountability buddies.
These gigs pay an average rate of $89 per task. Right now, New York ranks as the second most popular state for these unique requests.
How the platform works
Airtasker operates as an online marketplace for local services.
- Users post tasks they want to outsource.
- They set the price they are willing to pay.
- Local Taskers offer to take the job.
Whether you need help building furniture, cooking dinner, or crossing a massive finish line, you can easily find someone to do it.
