Getting someone to John F. Kennedy International Airport can be a headache before they’ve even reached security. Between ongoing construction, terminal traffic, and parking fees that can climb to $94 a day, drivers have plenty of reasons to plan ahead.
But there’s a free alternative that can help you skip the worst of the terminal gridlock: JFK’s dedicated drop-off and pick-up lot at the Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain station.
Instead of battling traffic right outside the terminals, drivers can pull into the designated lot and let passengers take the free AirTrain for the final leg of their journey.
What you pay at JFK Airport
While pulling up directly to the terminal curbside to drop someone off is technically free, severe congestion, construction, and strict enforcement can make getting to the terminal curb a frustrating experience, and drivers can’t leave their cars unattended while passengers make their way inside.
If you’re planning to park in one of JFK’s terminal lots instead, drive-up rates vary depending on which parking facility you use. The rates are:
- Terminal 4 Blue lot: $6 per half-hour, with a $94 daily maximum
- Terminal 5 Yellow lot: $6 per half-hour, with an $89 daily maximum
- Terminal 8 Red lot: $4 per half-hour, with a $74 daily maximum

Additional charges apply in half-hour increments for longer stays, and the daily maximum depends on the lot. The Green lot at Terminal 1 and the Orange lot at Terminal 7 are currently closed, with the airport directing drivers to use the Red lot instead.
Parking fees aren’t the only thing to keep in mind.
JFK’s terminal curbsides are reserved for active passenger pick-ups and drop-offs, and unattended vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. And attempting to dodge the garage fees by idling on the shoulders of the Van Wyck Expressway or the JFK Expressway is strictly prohibited.
The free way to drop off at JFK Airport
Rather than joining the traffic heading straight for the terminals, drivers can use JFK’s free Kiss & Fly lot at the Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain station.
Located outside the central terminal area, this zone allows drivers to bypass the airport’s heaviest gridlock entirely.
- The transit connection: Passengers can board the AirTrain at Lefferts Boulevard and ride to their departure terminal
- The cost and timing: The AirTrain ride between the lot and the passenger terminals is free and takes approximately eight minutes, although waiting times and service conditions can vary
- The rules: This is a designated waiting and drop-off area, not a place to leave your vehicle unattended. Drivers using the free Kiss & Fly lot must remain in their vehicles
If you’re picking someone up rather than dropping them off, JFK also has a free Cell Phone Lot near the JFK Expressway. It’s less than five minutes from the terminals and gives drivers somewhere to wait until their arriving passenger has collected their bags and is ready at the curb.

How other NYC-area airports compare
JFK isn’t the only major airport in the New York area with free waiting options. LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International Airport also offer designated lots where drivers can wait for passengers without paying for short-term parking.
- LaGuardia Airport (LGA): Operates a free Cell Phone Waiting Lot located on 94th Street, roughly half a mile from the terminals, designed to keep drivers from circling the heavily enforced airport frontages. It’s less than 10 minutes from all terminals and is open daily from 7 am to 11:59 pm
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR): Features a 24/7 free Cell Phone Lot situated on Brewster Road, adjacent to the P4 parking garage. It’s less than five minutes from all terminals and lets drivers wait until passengers are ready to be picked up
At all three airports, the key is to wait in a designated lot rather than circling the terminal or leaving your car unattended at the curb. A little planning can save drivers money, time, and an unnecessary airport traffic headache.
