The Port Authority is managing a $19 billion transformation of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). As part of this redevelopment, the new Terminal 6 is taking shape on the airport’s north side.
JFK remains the nation’s busiest airport for international travel, serving over 62 million passengers annually. The $4.2 billion Terminal 6 redevelopment covers 1.2 million square feet, replacing the former Terminal 6 and Terminal 7 sites with a consolidated facility.
Spacious layout and digital check-in
The new arrivals and departures hall features high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that bring natural light into the space.
The terminal integrates touchless technology throughout the passenger route. Travelers will use digital systems at check-in, security, and gate boarding to reduce processing times.

New gates and New York artwork
When finished, Terminal 6 will feature 10 new gates. Nine of these gates can accommodate wide-body aircraft.
The interior includes artwork created by New York-based artists. The building’s design also incorporates architectural elements that reflect iconic New York Landmarks.
Queens community impact and green energy
The construction project creates 4,000 jobs and generates $1.9 billion in payroll wages.
Developer JFK Millennium Partners committed $840 million in contracts to minority-, women-, service-disabled veteran-, and local-owned business enterprises (MWBEs, SDVOBs, and LBEs).
The facility also features sustainable infrastructure, including 4,000 solar panels to power operations.

Opening schedule and transit updates
Airport construction is currently at its peak volume. The Port Authority recommends using public transportation to access JFK and avoid roadway delays.
The first five gates of Terminal 6 will open to passengers in 2026.
