Are you looking for the perfect NYC autumn escape? You don’t need to leave the five boroughs to find an enchanting fall experience.
As the crisp October air returns and Central Park transforms into a sea of red, orange, and gold, locals know exactly where to go. You need to head straight to Belvedere Castle.
Located atop the massive rock outcrop known as Vista Rock, this 19th-century stone fortress is the second-highest natural point in the park.
It has long been a favorite backdrop for romantic moments and surprise proposals. During the fall, it becomes an absolute must-visit for sweeping views of the changing canopy.
A fascinating history hidden in plain sight
The castle is so much more than a pretty photo op. Designed by Central Park co-designer Calvert Vaux and architect Jacob Wrey Mould, the complex was officially completed in 1872.

The name “Belvedere” literally translates to “beautiful view” in Italian. When it was first constructed out of Manhattan schist, the building actually had no windows or doors.
It was intended purely as an open-air lookout tower to draw visitors into the surrounding landscape. It was carefully designed to look as if it naturally emerges right out of the dramatic rock beneath it.
Over the years, the castle’s purpose completely shifted. In 1919, the U.S. Weather Bureau converted the structure into a weather station, adding windows and doors to create indoor offices.
While they moved out in the 1960s, temperature, wind, and rainfall are still measured here today from equipment housed just south of the building.
After falling into severe disrepair, the Central Park Conservancy beautifully renovated the building in 1983. They completed another comprehensive restoration project in 2019 to modernize the terraces.
The ultimate vantage point for autumn colors
Today, the Belvedere continues to draw visitors eager to take in the sprawling cityscape.
When you stand on the castle’s twin balconies, you are treated to sweeping, panoramic views of Turtle Pond and the Great Lawn to the north, and the Ramble to the south.
Since the Ramble is densely packed with mature trees, the vibrant autumn colors reflect beautifully off the water below. It blends wild nature and towering city views in the most dramatic, quintessential NYC way possible.
Winding stone pathways, secret nooks, and terraces perfect for sunset make it one of the park’s most enchanting spots.
Even with millions of people wandering through Central Park each year, this hilltop fortress still manages to feel uniquely tucked away.

What to know before you visit
You can visit Belvedere Castle for free. There is no ticket required to wander the grounds or climb the stairs.
The castle also houses one of the park’s main visitor centers and a charming gift shop. When the building is open, you can ascend to the additional upper terraces for an even higher, wind-swept vantage point.
Grab a warm jacket, grab a hot coffee, and take a stroll up Vista Rock this season. With over 150 years of history, this miniature castle remains the ultimate destination to watch New York City embrace the fall.
