As the crisp autumn weather rolls in, we think we speak for all New Yorkers when we say we want to soak up every last bit of warmth before the temperatures really start to drop. Between the changing leaves, waterfront views, and slower pace, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season without venturing too far from Manhattan.
One destination in particular might look like a summer-only escape at first glance, but it actually makes for a pretty perfect fall outing — especially when you factor in sprawling views of the changing foliage from a hammock. Because honestly, is there a better way to take in peak fall colors than lying back and letting the scenery surround you?

📚 History of the Grove
Before becoming the parkland New Yorkers enjoy today, the southern portion of Governors Island didn’t even exist.
In the early 20th century, rock and dirt excavated during the construction of the Lexington Avenue subway line were used to create a 103-acre landfill addition to the island’s historic core. For decades, this newly expanded territory served utilitarian military functions for the U.S. Army and later the Coast Guard.
When military operations ceased and the island was transferred to the public in the 2000s, ambitious master planning transformed these flat landfill spaces into dynamic public topography.
The redesign incorporated rolling hills, sprawling lawns, and curated natural areas. The Hammock Grove was created as part of this transformation, conceived as a peaceful, ten-acre sanctuary designed specifically to promote rest, passive recreation, and immersion in native flora.
🍂 The Hammock Chapter
The Hammock Grove features 50 custom-designed red hammocks strung beneath a vibrant canopy of more than 1,500 trees representing dozens of species. While popular during hot summer afternoons, the grove takes on a special charm once autumn arrives.
As the foliage turns rich shades of crimson, orange, and gold, the canopy provides a striking natural display against the backdrop of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
Visiting in the fall also offers a distinct advantage over the peak summer rush: cooler temperatures make open-air lounging far more comfortable, and smaller crowds mean you can easily snag a hammock without a wait.
Wrapped in a light jacket or cozy sweater, resting in the grove offers a surprisingly serene respite from the hustle of the city.

🛥️ How to Get There
