Mark your calendars: the cutest fall event in New York City is officially making its return! Organizers of the annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade have announced the beloved furry spectacle will take over the East Village next weekend, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
While the iconic Village Halloween Parade remains a staple on every NYC fall bucket list, there’s a distinct, chaotic joy to this pup-focused event that instantly gives us the zoomies. Now in its 36th year, what began in Manhattan’s first dog run has grown into what many celebrate as the world’s largest dog parade, with thousands of costumed dogs and owners alike!
Led by New York Dog Parade—a nonprofit dedicated to celebrating dog-human friendship—and presented by Kismet, the premium pet lifestyle brand founded by John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, this year’s event promises to be one of the most vibrant yet.
Here’s everything you need to know about the 2026 parade.

What to Expect at the 2026 Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade
The world’s biggest Halloween event for canines is fittingly held near NYC’s first-ever dog run in Tompkins Square Park. Thousands of New Yorkers and their elaborately costumed dogs will transform Avenue B into a runway of four-legged fashion.
The competition is famously creative, and 2026 will be no exception. Fern Watt, founder of New York Dog Parade, stated:
Someone emailed us to say they were dressing their dog as frozen yogurt. So clearly, the competition this year is going to be stiff. There’s a lot that can feel heavy in the world right now, but somewhere in New York City, someone is crafting a frozen yogurt costume for their dog. We do find hope in that.

Alongside the legendary costume competition, the 2026 event will feature a massive public festival block packed with special activations. Attendees can expect:
- 🎃 Legendary Costume Competition: Watch costumed canines compete for bragging rights in one of NYC’s most beloved Halloween traditions. Due to limited capacity inside Tompkins Square Park, only select registered participants will be eligible to compete
- 📺 Live Competition Broadcast: For the first time, dog lovers outside of the city will be able to follow the high-stakes costume competition live
- 🐶 Street-Wide Block Party: Soak up the festive atmosphere as the surrounding streets fill with dogs, owners, and Halloween costumes galore
- 🦴 Special Activations & Treats: Expect photo ops, giveaways, rescue initiatives, and plenty of Kismet “Nugs” for the costumed canine marchers
- 🎃 Sponsor Pop-Ups: Activations and surprises from Fetch Pet Insurance, Earth Rated, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day for Pets, Allegra, and VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group)

Spotlighting Adoptable Rescues
Because October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is using its massive platform to help pups in need find their forever homes.
New York Dog Parade is partnering with the ASPCA and Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) to spotlight adoptable dogs throughout the month. The parade itself will serve as a celebration of rescue dogs, with shelter pups taking part in the festivities to raise awareness for adoption across the five boroughs.
