Best Bars in NYC for an Evening of Live Jazz

The cultural diversity in NYC is undeniable, and the city’s love for live music is unwavering. On any given night of the week you can find a bar or venue playing whatever genre of music you enjoy.

However, of the most notable bars you’ll find throughout the city with live performances are cozy jazz bars. Some have been around since the Prohibition era, others only a few decades. Nonetheless, these are our select favorites when it comes to exceptional jazz joints in NYC. Where: 75 Christopher Street (Greenwich Village)

Fat Cat is a pool hall that offers a range of games from ping pong to foosball, shuffleboard, scrabble, and plenty more. This is the perfect bar for a late night jazz show, with weekend performances starting as last as 1:30am. The bar itself doesn’t close until 5am, so you can play and drink your way into the next morning.

Where: 188 Avenue B (Alphabet City)

This charming bar in the East Village has live jazz music playing every night from 8pm until midnight with no cover charge to get in. Their specialty cocktails are phenomenal, the staff is kind, and the food is delicious. A go-to spot for something fun to do when the weather outside gets frightful.

Eat, drink and be merry as you watch live music at Kaufman Astoria Studio’s Astor Room. It’s not so much a bar as it is an elegant fine dining experience, but any person who loves jazz music should visit this venue at least once—be it for dinner or brunch.

Where: 148 West 133rd Street (Central Harlem)

This jazz bar in Harlem is a true speakeasy that’s been around since the days of Prohibition. You’ll be transported back in time the moment you step into this quaint parlor. They’re only open on Friday and Saturday nights, but the night will be a guaranteed success with fabulous jazz performances.

Where: 29 Cornelia Street (Greenwich Village)

Head downstairs at this 40 year old cafe in the West Village for wonderful live music and great cocktails. The food upstairs is great, but it’s definitely worth an evening date night to get cozy, sip wine, and listen to great musicians perform only a few feet away from you.

Where: 178 7th Ave South (Greenwich Village)

True jazz fans will want to make a reservation for Village Vanguard. This nearly 80-year-old club has the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra playing every Monday night, and a rotating roster of jazz artists performing each week from Tues. through Sun.
