It’s easy to take this amazing city for granted. This article isn’t intended to be a “finger-wagging”, patronizing, or a holier-that-thou observation of the SecretNYC readership. After a discussion in our offices, these are the things WE find ourselves forgetting, and we have the feeling that maybe you guys do too. We all have a love/hate relationship with the city, all we’re trying to do is tip the scales back into the “love” direction.
1. We live in a cultural melting pot!
We live in a city where we can eat Ethiopian food, explore an authentic Chinese community, learn how to paint in the tradition Japanese art of Sumi-e, learn real South American dances, then top it off with a “pint” of beer in a traditional British Pub. We never really doubted New York is a melting pot, but we do sometimes take it for granted.
2. We deliver… everything!
Seamless, Minibar Delivery (liquor, beer & wine), even your groceries! Now we only have to leave our homes to work, party and hunt Pokémon. Netflix and chill anyone?
3. We have easy access to literally ANYWHERE in the world.
Multiple airports, trains, buses and ports… This is the kind of thing you only take for granted when you’re here, as soon as you start to travel from outside the city you realize how complicated it can be.
4. Activities to Keep Fit in NYC are endless.
Yoga, dance classes, climbing, cycling, kayaking… the list is literally endless. Any kind of work-out you can think of has a place in this city, even a few you ways to work out you never imagine existed.
5. We are the Street Art Capital of the World
Ok, even though a lot of graffiti isn’t strictly legal, we have some of the best and most prolific street artists in the world. Instagram is busting at the seams with photos of our world class street art. Some travel companies even offer street art tours of the city.
6. NYC wineries are awesome.
Forget Napa Valley. There, I said it! In New York state we have over 1,600 working vineyards, and most of them plan excursions from NYC. Vinyards have even cropped up inside the city itself, like the rooftop vineyard in hidden within the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
7. We get to watch free movies
In practically every borough there is a park offering a free movie, and not just one or two, you are spoiled for choice! Take advantage of the good weather and get your cinema fix for free!
8. …and free concerts!
NYC is brimming with free live music, especially this time of year. one of the biggest perks of the summer is the live outdoor shows that are dotted around the city.
9. Someone got a problem with you? Don’t worry, you’ll probably never see them again!
So you piss someone off on the street/subway/bar… Don’t sweat it, just let it go. You are extremely unlikely to ever see that person again. With a population of well over 8 million, NYC makes it easy to forget an ex, or anoying acquaintance.
10. We know how to have a good time
When it comes to a city wide celebration, parade or street party, NYC does it right! Just take a look at Pride, or the Mermaid parade! For a city with a reputation for being rude, we sure do know how to enjoy ourselves.
