Atlas Obscura, online magazine and travel company, has teamed up with The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, The Louisiana Office of Tourism, Visit North Carolina, and Visit Mississippi to bring flavors of the South to NYC in a convenient and unexpected way: via vending machine!
The Southern Obscura Vending Machine will be located in Brooklyn’s McCarren Parkhouse from October 6th – October 10th. This is the second iteration of ‘The World’s Most Unusual Vending Machine,’ following the 2021 installation that was created to coincide with the book launch of Gastro Obscura: A Food Adventurer’s Guide.
This year’s machine will highlight Southern delicacies from bakers, farmers, and chefs in the American South. It will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen offered in typical vending machine! Expect wild items like soul-food truffles, Carolina BBQ rub, grape preserves, sweet potato sorghum upside-down cake, salt-rising bread, King Cake Popcorn, ywllow dent corn grits, chicory pecan bitters, and even a 3-inch iron skillet. Find out more items here.
The 5-day residency will kick-off with a grand opening celebration from 4pm – 8pm on Thursday, October 6th. Explore all the new offerings yourself and enjoy fabulous drink specials while listening to DJ Jonathon Toubin spin Southern rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and soul 45s. You can RSVP for free here.
When: October 6th – 10th
Where: McCarren Park House (855 Lorimer St., Brooklyn, NY)
