Although New York inflation refund checks began circulating on September 26th, some residents are wondering what happened to theirs.
With Halloween right around the corner and October quickly coming to a close, it’s understandable to feel a bit anxious — especially if neighbors have started collecting their checks and you’re still waiting.
Considering there are over eight million New Yorkers who qualify for the assistance, don’t be alarmed if you’re staring at an empty mailbox. We’ll tell you what you need to know.
What’s the status of the New York inflation refund checks
The state’s first-ever inflation refund checks began rolling out at the end of September and will continue to do so throughout October and November. While yes, it could feel unsettling to know those around you have already gotten theirs while you’re still empty-handed, there’s a reason.
According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, you may receive your check sooner or later than your neighbors, as mailings are not based on zip code or region. Given the large volume of recipients who qualify — approximately 8.2 million New Yorkers — the checks are being mailed over the course of several weeks.
Eligibility is based on your 2023 tax return, and the State will mail the check to your most up-to-date address.
Where is my inflation refund check?
Ah, the million-dollar question. (Or should we say the $400 question?)
The NYS Department of Taxation and Finance writes online: “We cannot provide a specific delivery schedule, and our Contact Center representatives will not have additional information on the status of your check.” However, the photo below is what you can expect to find in the mail, for your reference:

So, it turns out New Yorkers might need to be patient just a tad longer. (Not necessarily our strong suit.) For any questions or concerns, visit the Department of Taxation and Finance website.
