There are still a few more weeks left of summer to veg out and enjoy the beach life. If you’ve been putting off weekend travel plans, or just want to spend a little more time with nature while you can, here are a few getaway destinations you can still get to before the summer ends.
Montauk
Many New Yorkers frequent Montauk for its relaxed and cozy beach-town vibes. While there stay by the water at the Surf Lodge, and check out spots like the Clam Bar and Sloppy Tuna for some live music, good food, and an easy-going atmosphere.
Fire Island
Fire Island is an ideal destination for a small group getaway. Everything on the island is walking distance so once you’re there you won’t have to worry about transportation to get around. Head to the lighthouse and hang by the beach for a few days to unwind from the city madness.
North Fork, L.I.
With over 60 vineyards, you can’t visit North Fork and not go wine tasting. There are also breweries and several farms that grow fresh produce. This quiet getaway is a nice retreat from the concrete jungle and would be perfect weekend plans for couples or a handful of friends. You’ll want to make it to Sannino Bella Vita Vineyard, Macari Vineyards, Bedell Cellars, 8 Hands Farm, Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., and Shine Estate Vineyards and Farmhouse.
Bermuda
You’ll need to get on this one as soon as possible if you plan to make it there before summer officially ends since you’ll have to book a flight. However, it’ll be totally worth it. Spend your time diving, boating, unwinding at Horseshoe Bay Beach, and soaking up the sun.
Woodstock
Hop on a bus north for a few hours from NYC and you’ll come to the lovely town of Woodstock. The art, culture, and natural beauty of the town can’t be ignored. For a weekend packed with activities be sure to browse through Mower’s Saturday Market, take a hike to Kaaterskill Falls, eat at Cucina and Garden Cafe, and maybe do some antique shopping. If you can fit it in, check out the Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra and catch a performance at the Bearsville Theater.
Shelter Island
If you truly want to do nothing for a few days and disconnect from the world go the Shelter Island. For a great stay you’ll likely want to book a room at Sunset Beach. Here you’ll have a private sundeck that overlooks the sunset (of course), and you’ll be able to spend your days on the island biking, paddle boarding, and kayaking.
The cooler weather will be here before you know it, so make the most of the weekends you have left!
