Every year the vintage Great Dome car is attached to an Amtrak train for a few weeks out of the year. In this dome, passengers enjoy stunning views of the colorful fall foliage as they ride north along the Adirondack Mountains.
It’s a 10 hour ride in total from New York to Montreal, but every peaceful moment and breathtaking view is worth it. If you’ve been itching to take a trip to Canada, now (well, next month) is the best time to go.
The experience is only available for a short time, from September 27 until it is taken off the tracks on November 2. During this time you can catch a ride on this vintage dome car from 1955 on Thursday, Saturday, and Monday heading northbound on train 69, and Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday heading southbound on train 68.

Any passenger of the train can hop on the Great Dome with their ticket purchase, but it fills up on a first come, first served basis. To secure a spot by one of the windows (or to get on the car at all) you’ll want to arrive at the train station early.
This stunning trip through the Adirondacks should be on everyone’s bucket list. With a glass dome above you, you’ll see New York in all its Fall beauty as the leaves are changing colors. One-way tickets start at $53.
