We of course are familiar with the annual Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony, but you might not be aware of Rockefeller Center’s other holiday traditions, specifically Tuba Christmas!
This annual event brings hundreds of tubists of all ages and levels together to perform holiday classics under the dazzling Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Each tubist (8 to 80) dress in festive outfits and even decorate their instrument!
Going on its 50th year, Tuba Christmas will happen on Sunday, December 10th, 2023 at 3pm. It will be led by Chris Wilhjelm, conductor of the New Jersey Wind Symphony and former conductor of the Goldman Memorial Band.
The very first Tuba Christmas dates back to 1974. It was invented by talented tubist, Harvey Phillips, for his teacher, the late William J. Bel. Since then, the musical event now takes place across 200 cites worldwide. The entire spectacle is free and open to the public.
