The Garment District just got a new, immersive art installation as part of the year-round public art program, Garment District Art on the Plazas.
LOOP (the name of the installation) requires human participation to work. The six retro-futuristic “loops” are powered by you and a partner through the pushing and pulling of the lever inside. As you move this lever back and forth, an “animated flipbook-style musical movie” will play on a loop around you.
As the installation’s descriptions mentions, it is “inspired by the zoetrope, an optical toy invented in the 19th century.” When the cylinder spins it lights up and plays short animated movies inspired by 13 fairytales. Everything you see and hear will be determined by the speed at which you move the lever.
The installation can be viewed from now until March 31 on Broadway, between West 37th and West 38th Street. Here’s a look at how it works:
