Name something more iconic than the New Year’s Eve Times Square Ball Drop. We’ll tell you: two ball drops.
For the first time since the tradition began over a century ago, New York City will host two separate ball drop ceremonies in a single year. While the first will ring in 2026 as usual, the second is a historic tribute to the United States’ Semiquincentennial–the nation’s massive 250th birthday.
🇺🇸 A Patriotic Makeover for the Constellation Ball
After the crystal ball completes its descent at midnight on December 31st, the party isn’t over. Around 12:04 am on January 1st, the ball (recently dubbed the “Constellation Ball”) will rise again. But it won’t look like the shimmering multi-color display we’re used to.
Instead, it will be relit in a vibrant red, white, and blue design. This “preview” moment will be accompanied by a pyrotechnic show and 2,000 pounds of patriotic confetti to the tune of “America the Beautiful.”
🪩 The Main Event: July 3rd, 2026
The official second drop won’t happen immediately, though.
Mark your calendars for Friday, July 3rd, 2026, when the ball will drop again to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This marks the first time since 1907 that the ball has been used for a non-New Year’s Eve celebration.
But this is merely just a preview of the festivities that are to come this summer, which Rosie Rios, Chair of America250, the nonpartisan organization planning the festivities, told The NY Post is going to be “huge” and “beyond anyone’s expectations.” Rios stated:
To ring in the 4th of July, starting with the same type of festivities that you would normally see on New Year’s Eve — what better way to represent this global impact that we as a country have and the responsibility that comes with that? Whatever you’re imagining as a broadcast performance, it’s much more than that.

America250 is partnering with One Times Square and the Times Square Alliance to stage the event.
While a City Hall spokesperson noted that “conversations are ongoing” regarding the finer details, the red-white-and-blue ball design is expected to be officially unveiled just before midnight this New Year’s Eve.
