Living in New York is not like living anywhere else; so of course, there’s plenty of things a New Yorker needs here that probably isn’t much of a necessity anywhere else. But if you want to survive in this urban jungle, you better invest in these items! Trust us. We know things.
1. Metrocard
Ok, ok, this is obvious. But if it isn’t the biggest “need” we don’t know what is. Always have one on you and do your best to fill it up. Especially if you’re in a rush somewhere, there’s nothing worse than frantically pushing buttons on the Metrocard machine to add more money, all while watching your train slowly pull away.
2. A white noise machine
Because you are going to hear everyone, always, at every point of the day. Your upstairs neighbor? Yeah, they’ll be making noise at 4 am. And that car alarm across the street is going to go off at 1:30 am like clockwork. Best to be prepared for the perfect night’s sleep.
3. Wall Storage
Seriously, Ikea is going to be your best friend with all their fancy, buildable storage you can place on walls. Because lord knows, you won’t have enough floor space for most things.
4. A humidifier
Because winters are going to make your apartment brutally dry. No one wants to wake up with cracked lips and a weird cough that makes everyone in the subway think you’re sick.
5. A loyalty card at your local pharmacy
CVS? Rite-Aid? Duane Reade? Wherever you go to most, get that free loyalty card. You are going to be buying your entire life there, all the time. It’ll pay you back in money off and awesome coupons.
