A 33,500-square-foot food hall is opening on Canal Street this year, and it’ll have an Italian-European flair!
Mercato Fabbrica will be taking over the building that was formally the First National City Bank of New York, located at Canal Street and Broadway. The new food hall will be multi-level with a mezzanine area and private, members-only restaurant. It’s “a forthcoming culinary destination inspired by the great markets, department stores and social clubs around the world, set to open in late 2020.”
On the ground level there will be a marketplace for artisanal groceries, Drogheria—which is currently accepting applications for independent merchants and restauranteurs to partner with along with producers and emerging brands interested to be sold in the marketplace. According to their current description, “Drogheria will be a destination for New Yorkers to shop for everyday items and special occasions with specialities from regional farmers, artisans and chefs alongside a finely-curated selection of global ingredients and products ranging from vegetables and dairy to meats and cheeses, pasta, jams, chocolate, coffee and other treats.”
There will be another floor featuring a European-inspired general goods boutique called Dipartimento (which is also accepting applications at the moment), in addition to the Mezzanino which will feature a tea parlor, nanobrewery and wellness cafe. The third floor will be home to the culinary social club Pax Romana with coworking lounge, bar (Medicina), cookbook and vinyl libraries, podcast broadcasting and listening suites. Pax Romana will continue into the Basement area where there will be a members-only restaurant, and then additionally a terrace on the roof. The roof will also feature a plant-based cafe, bar, outdoor cinema and garden!
The food hall and culinary social club is currently in it’s early stages of planning, but it seems to already be taking shape! Stay tuned for word on when Mercato Fabbrica will plan to open by.
