Everyone knows and loves Flaco, a Eurasian eagle-owl that went on to become an NYC icon after fleeing the Central Park Zoo when vandals had destroyed his enclosure. He spent a year flying around Manhattan, stealing the hearts of many.
However, the beloved owl eventually died after a building collision and a necropsy report showing proof of rat poison. Even so, the memory of this beautiful owl lives on.
Not only will this feathered friend be immortalized in new book, but The New-York Historical is set to launch a Flaco exhibition next month. Here’s everything you need to know about The Year of Flaco.

What is The Year of Flaco?
A new exhibition titled The Year of Flaco will be on view at The New-York Historical to honor Flaco the owl and his year-long journey around Manhattan. The Year of Flaco has been curated by Rebecca Klassen and will tell the story of Flaco’s life after escaping the Central Park Zoo through photography, video documentation, momentos, letters and more that were left at the bird’s Central Park memorial.

Moreover, the exhibition will touch on the dangers birds face in urban environments, Flaco’s impact on legislation and further ways to ensure the safety of wildlife in the city.
When will The Year of Flaco be on view?
The exhibition will be on view starting February 7th 2025 through July 6th, 2025.
