The unprecedented egg shortage in NYC is real, and New Yorkers and local businesses are doing all they can in these extraordinary times!
Just this past week alone we’ve seen FarmerJawn Agriculture give away 300 free eggs and multiple poultry markets around the city shut down.
Another player stepped into the egg world over the weekend, the popular skincare brand, The Ordinary, in collaboration with MSCHF, a company known for their out-of-the-box marketing tactics.
The two brands collaborated on a timely marketing stunt appropriately called “Ordinary Eggs”, selling a dozen eggs for a mere $3.37 apiece at both their two flagship locations in NYC in Nolita (26 Prince St) and Midtown (475 5th Avenue).
They wrote on their Instagram over the weekend, “We heard NYC needed eggs. This weekend, you can get 12 ordinarily priced eggs at our stores for $3.37. No frills, just eggs. While supplies last.”
The Ordinary’s entire egg campaign comes on the back of the United States’ most severe egg crisis in many years, if not ever.
Prices on eggs have skyrocketed by over 65% in 2024 and are expected to climb by another 41% in 2025, according to The Economic Times.
The main reason for this being a devastating bird flu (H5N1) outbreak and continued supply chain disruptions since the pandemic.
Here in New York City, egg prices have been soaring at an even HIGHER rate to due to the city’s pricey cost of living.
Many on social media have found plenty of stores selling dozen eggs for over $10-$12 minimum…and even one in Washington Heights selling them at an insane price of $18.99 for twelve eggs.
Even local bodega owners have been getting in on the craze by selling “loosies” in bundles of three or five eggs.
Not to mention that the US is importing hundreds of millions of eggs from Turkey and South Korea to address the nationwide shortage.
