The Met Gala is getting ready to kick off and already the extravaganza is turning heads — and we’re not just talking about the outfits.
The iconic May celebration, which coincides with the museum’s Costume Institute spring exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” just broke the record for raising the most money in the event’s 77-year history with $31 million. Per The New York Times, these numbers cement the event’s status as “the pre-eminent benefit among the city’s cultural institutions.”
Fashion’s biggest night out funds the beloved NYC museum, and in particular, its Costume Institute.
“The Costume Institute’s collection of more than thirty-three thousand objects represents seven centuries of fashionable dress and accessories for men, women, and children, from the fifteenth century to the present” reps from The Met stated, according to NBC.
But the staggering $31 million is not the only interesting stat from the 2025 occasion: this Met Gala is the first one in 22 years to have a focus on menswear.
“This spring’s event will mark the opening of the exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” a profoundly scholarly show centering an important legacy of Black-led sartorial innovation and creative expression that continues to inspire and shape our world today,” said Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour are co-chairing this year’s Met Gala, and LeBron James will serve as honorary chair.
