Cozy season is in full swing in NYC, and The Little Bookshop in Brooklyn is the perfect place to venture for all the comfort you’re craving when temperatures dip.
The newly-opened bookstore on Bushwick Avenue welcomes readers to explore its generous selection, but the family-run biz takes things a step further. While The Twisted Spine hones in on horror and Love & Legends envelops visitors into the romantasy genre, this East Williamsburg outpost shifts into soup mode with bowls of butter bean stew and sides of sourdough.

Mother and daughter duo, Mary and Ashley Jones, wanted more than a place to pick up a bestseller, but a place to welcome the community.
“We wanted to make sure we could nourish people outside of books and things like that,” Ashley tells Secret NYC. “The easiest thing to think of, which is [my mother’s] favorite thing, is soup.”
And, as Ashley can attest, her mother Mary is “the best cook on the planet.” Needless to say, the cafe/bookstore combo took off in perfect harmony — and now that Arctic blasts are approaching, we couldn’t think of a better place to spend the afternoon.
(Good news for those with dietary restrictions: Ashley’s husband Hans has assured vegetarian options are available to customers.)
Though the shelves are very generously packed, the soup is certainly an enticing draw.
“It took off. We had people come in at like 9, 9:30a.m. and want to order soup,” Ashley jokes. “And we’re like ‘The soup isn’t even on yet, yo!'”
The shop might still be in its infancy as the family works on creating a roster of events, solidifies its menu, and acquires a liquor license, but one thing is for certain: New Yorkers will be there every step of the way to see what happens next.
