There are countless bars in New York City, but very few are true institutions.
We all hunt for that specific feeling—a place with history etched into the floorboards, where the drinks are made with purpose and the crowd feels electric. On a crisp March evening, nothing compares to the pull of a proper Irish pub for a drink that warms you from the inside out.
That search ends at 30 Water Street.
In the heart of the Financial District, you’ll find The Dead Rabbit, a bar that hasn’t just won local hearts but has also been crowned the “World’s Best Bar” multiple times.
This celebrated spot fuses the grit of a 19th-century Dublin “grocery and grog” with the precision of a world-class cocktail lounge, creating something entirely its own!
The legend of the “Dead Rabbits”
Stepping into The Dead Rabbit is like walking into a time capsule of Lower Manhattan lore.
The name isn’t just a quirky choice; it’s a nod to an infamous Irish-American street gang from the 1850s that once ruled the Five Points.
Led by the legendary John Morrissey (a bare-knuckle boxer who eventually became a U.S. Congressman), the Dead Rabbits were fierce defenders of their community.
Today, that “fighting spirit” lives on through the bar’s dedication to craft. The walls are covered in Irish memorabilia and signed dollar bills, creating an atmosphere that feels both lived-in and legendary.

Secrets of the perfect pint (and Irish Coffee)
So what keeps New Yorkers coming back?
It boils down to two drinks elevated to an art form: their renowned Irish Coffee and a flawlessly served Pint of Guinness.
Last year alone, they poured an astonishing 250,000 pints of Guinness, and it’s all thanks to their signature three-part pour.
While most bars stick to the standard two-part method, The Dead Rabbit uses a specific cadence to ensure a rock-solid head and a creamy texture that is arguably the best in the city.
Then, there’s the Irish Coffee.
Bar Director Cory O’Brien-Pniewski shared that the magic is in the method.
They use Teeling Small Batch Whiskey for its specific notes that bridge the gap between the strong coffee and the cold cream. The showstopper? The cream is hand-shaken to a precise “pourable” consistency so it floats delicately on top. It’s finished with a spray of whiskey to pop air bubbles and a dusting of fresh nutmeg—no canned whipped cream in sight.

St. Patrick’s Day: “It’s Paddy, Not Patty”
If you’re tired of neon-green beer and plastic shamrocks, The Dead Rabbit is your sanctuary.
They famously champion the “Paddy’s, Not Patty’s” mantra, focusing on authentic Irish culture over clichés.
For 2026, they aren’t just celebrating for a day—they’re taking over the calendar from March 12th through the 17th.
With 11 events packed into six days, here’s what’s on the radar:
- The Full Irish Experience: Expect a curated lineup of comedy sets, high-energy DJs, and their signature Sunday Seisiúns (traditional live music) to keep the spirit high.
- Game Day: For the sports fans, they’ll be screening all the Six Nations Round 5 rugby games—the atmosphere is guaranteed to be electric (and loud).
- The Menu: Starting March 14th, their exclusive St. Paddy’s cocktail specials go live alongside a “very Irish” food menu. Think elevated comfort food that goes way beyond your standard bangers and mash
