Joining the beautiful new snowy owls at the Bronx Zoo, is an adorable silvered langur baby. Born at the Bronx Zoo in November 2024, the baby monkey has made its debut, sporting an orange-colored coat.
Silvered langurs are native to forest habitats in Asia, including countries like Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. Though adult silvered langurs are silver-grey in color like their name suggests, with dark grey bodies and silver-tipped hairs, silvered langur babies are born with a vibrant orange coat. As babies mature within the first three to five months after birth, their coat begins changing into the silver grey color to match the adults.
Unfortunately, populations of these beautiful species are decreasing, primarily due to habitat loss, and are listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) network, with the help of the Wildlife Conservation Society, has established a silvered langur program to maintain their population through a breeding program.
The Bronx Zoo is home to one of North America’s largest breeding groups of silvered langurs. The lovable baby langur is the latest addition to the more than 100 silvered langurs born at the Bronx Zoo since 1985.
You can meet this precious silvered langur baby at the Bronx Zoo’s Jungle World exhibit. The zoo will be open during New York’s winter recess (February 17th-21st), so there’s no better time to go than now!
