Lovers of mouthwateringly gargantuan hot food bars and endless pantry staples will be delighted to know that Tashkent Halal Supermarket, Brighton Beach’s beloved market known for its 200+ self-serve buffet trays filled with Uzbek food, has finally opened its first Manhattan location. The news has finally put years of anticipation to rest.
Tashkent Halal Supermarket first announced their plans to expand to Manhattan back in November 2022. They originally planned to open at the end of that year, though things were obviously delayed. And, needless to say, New Yorkers have been awaiting the day they’d finally hear the words “we’re open” each time they’d walk past the storefront’s papered windows.
Like its predecessors, the new West Village outpost is part prepared foods emporium, part supermarket, and part snack shop. Upon entering the 1,525-square-foot space, shoppers are whisked towards an open kitchen which includes a bakery counter and made-to-order kebab bar. Downstairs, which is just as impressive in size as the 1,525-square-foot main floor, houses the supermarket’s pièce de résistance: its extensive prepared foods bar.
Shoppers will also find a meat counter, pantry items, and fresh produce beyond the cornucopia of Central Asian and Soviet food–and a few western dishes–featuring everything from several varieties of samsa and grilled meats to herring under a fur coat and plov.
Tashkent’s Manhattan outpost is open daily from 6 am until 11 pm. Breakfast offerings, which include eats such as syrniki, are swapped out for lunch options around noon. Pair its insanely affordable eats with its close proximity to Washington Square Park and you’ve got yourself a solid new go-to.
