From Backyard at Hudson Yards to BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!, summer in NYC means ample opportunity to enjoy time outdoors without breaking the bank–something we welcome with open arms since we’re spending all our damn money on rent. And this June a brand new summer series is bringing more free fun to the Brooklyn waterfront: Sugar, Sugar! at Domino Park.
Kicking off Wednesday, June 4th, the inaugural four-week performance series will bring together dance, music, theater, and more to Domino Square, the latest addition to Domino Park’s 5-acre public park overlooking the East River. And it’s happening all in front of the stunning backdrop of the NYC skyline!

Brooklyn-based creative strategy and producing practice Public Assembly is the one curating the series, which will “celebrate the legacy of North Brooklyn and New York’s creative community more broadly, highlighting artists, collectives, and institutions.” Plus, they’re partnering with curator, director, and creative producer Ellpetha Tsivicos, whose production company One Whale’s Tale is known for creating maximalist, multidisciplinary performances, so we just know the series will be entertaining.
The program will showcase experimental performances that span theater, dance, music, and puppetry. Series highlights include:
- A performance by experimental jazz musicians Isaiah Barr, David Frazier Jr., and William Parker plus special guests
- The Revival: It Is Our Duty, a Juneteenth celebration
- DIY Primordial Futurism: a flamboyant invitation to celebrate horseshoe crabs and deep time, inviting audiences to collaborate through naturedrag, comics drawing, fabric handling, and singing “crabaoke”
- A performance by Poncili Creación transforming salvaged materials into vibrant puppetry
- A drag performance from Evan Silver aka Tiresias that augments the body with puppetry contraptions to create surreal and vivid visuals

To further curate the ultimate summer vibes, Capicu! will host each night’s pre-show with NYC Dominos, DJs, and dancing, and a full plaza party will close out celebrations with live music and dancing, a vibrant marketplace, local food vendors, and interactive art activities. Annabel Thompson, Co-founder of Public Assembly, stated:
Sugar, Sugar! is a small offering to the city’s already rich landscape of outdoor programming and we are thrilled to invite artistic experimentation that reflects and responds to this site of Williamsburg’s waterfront.
