Around 3 p.m. yesterday, Thursday, January 4th, a northbound 1 train collided with a work train, causing a derailment near 96 Street. The derailment caused major disruptions on the 1, 2, and 3 trains, along with delays on northbound 4/5 trains.
As of today, Friday, January 5th, 1, 2, and 3 train service remains partially suspended at many stations in Manhattan at least through today.
NYCT Subway, which shares subway updates on Twitter, train service is operating as follows:
- No 1 trains between 137 St-City College and Times Sq-42 St
- No 2 trains on the West Side of Manhattan
- No 3 trains between 135 St and Times Sq-42 St
Officials state that crews are making repairs to the train that derailed, and straphangers should expect delays on all of these trains and consider taking nearby subway or bus alternatives.
According to the New York Times, the collision happened as a work train was switching tracks and struck by the passenger train, causing it to derail. It was “not immediately clear why the trains collided.”
