Governor Kathy Hochul previously announced nearly 3 million New Yorkers would receive over $2.2 billion in tax relief through the School Tax Relief (STAR) program this summer and fall. If you’re a homeowner and haven’t received a STAR check yet, this could be your moment.
What is the School Tax Relief (STAR) program?
The School Tax Relief (STAR) program offers property tax benefits to eligible New York State homeowners and seniors. It runs annually from June to November, with payments going out in phases.
- Total distributed – $2.2 billion
- Recipients – ~3 million across NY state
Governor Kathy Hochul stated:
The STAR program provides needed school tax relief to millions of New York homeowners — and the program is now in full swing. During a time of financial uncertainty…my administration is putting money back in the pockets of families with check and credit deliveries continuing to go out to hundreds of thousands of homeowners statewide.
Who qualifies for a STAR Tax Relief Check?
To receive a STAR benefit, you must:
- Own your home
- Use it as your primary residence
- Have a total household income of $500,000 or less

How much money will I receive in STAR tax relief?
- Basic STAR Credit – most homeowners will receive between $350 and $600
- Enhanced STAR Credit – most seniors will receive between $700 and $1,500
When is the second round going out?
The program is divided into two phases:
- Phase 1 – delivered in June and July to areas with early school tax due dates (completed)
- Phase 2 – begins August through October for areas with later tax due dates
If you haven’t received your STAR benefit yet, you’re likely in Phase 2.
How will I get my STAR payment?
There are two ways STAR benefits are delivered:
- STAR credit – a check or direct deposit from the NYS Tax Department
- STAR exemption – a reduction applied directly to your school tax bill
Already enrolled? You can track your check online or set up direct deposit through the Homeowner Benefit Portal.
How do I apply?
If you haven’t received a STAR credit or exemption and think you’re eligible, you can apply online through the New York State STAR registration page.
Bottom Line
If you’re a New York homeowner and haven’t received your STAR check yet, keep an eye on your mailbox or bank account starting this August through October. With up to $1,500 in relief available, it’s one of the largest statewide tax benefits going out this year!
