If you’ve been checking your banking app a little more closely lately, you’re not alone.
Between the winter utility hikes and the 2026 cost-of-living shifts, every cent counts in this city and some good news is finally coming.
A major wave of Social Security payments is hitting NYC accounts tomorrow, Wednesday, February 18.
Thanks to the 2.8% COLA (Cost-of-Living Adjustment) that kicked in at the start of the year, those monthly checks are looking a bit beefier in 2026.
But since the Social Security Administration likes to keep us on our toes, not everyone gets paid at the same time.
So…am I getting paid tomorrow?
The SSA follows a “birthday rule,” and tomorrow’s payout is reserved for a specific group of New Yorkers.
You’ll likely see a deposit on February 18 if:
- Your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of any month.
- You started receiving benefits after May 1997.
If your birthday is the 21st or later, don’t panic! You’re just in the next “tier,” and your funds should arrive next Wednesday, February 25.
How much are we talking?
While the average retired worker is seeing about $2,071 this year, some high-earning New Yorkers who waited until age 70 to retire are seeing a “max payout” of a whopping $5,181.
Even if you aren’t at the max, most retirees are seeing an average bump of about $56 per month compared to last year.
It might not cover a whole dinner at a fancy restaurant, but it certainly helps with the grocery bill.
The “Double Payment” warning
Officials are also highlighting a weird calendar quirk for February.
If you’re an SSI recipient, you’re actually going to get a second deposit on Friday, February 27.
Before you start planning a celebratory night out, keep in mind: This isn’t a bonus.
Because March 1 falls on a Sunday, the government is just sending your March funds a few days early. You’ll want to budget carefully so you don’t run short by the end of next month!
Why is my payment late?
Since Monday was Presidents Day, some smaller local NYC credit unions might have a tiny bit of holiday-related lag.
If your money isn’t there by breakfast tomorrow, give it until Thursday morning before you start making phone calls.
