Delightful news for those with a sweet tooth: Portland-born ice cream makers, Salt & Straw, have officially arrived in NYC.
Co-founders and cousins, Kim and Tyler Malek, previously hosted an East Coast pop-up in summer 2023 that completely sold out. After seeing such a demand in the city, they’ve decided to open permanent locations on the Upper West Side and the West Village.
As of September 20th, 2024, the Upper West Side shop is officially open and scooping some of the most delightful and unique flavors New York has to offer. If you fancy a snack, now’s the time to make your way over.
The Danny Meyer-backed biz definitely approaches desserts with an unexpected twist. Currently, this month’s flavors are all inspired by the place we call home and includes collaborations with other local businesses. For example, you can have breakfast and dinner in one, courtesy of the cinnamon raisin bagel & schmear ice cream, a joint effort between Salt & Straw and Popup Bagels, which also has a home on the UWS.
If you’re really feeling adventurous, why not try the collab with Carnegie Deli? That’s right, folks: the pastrami on rye is available in ice cream form! If you’d prefer something a little less inventive, rest assured the classic flavors, such as sea salt caramel, are just as enticing as the bold scoops. Even better? Salt & Straw is open from 11am to 12am daily, should you crave a midnight snack.
Over the company’s 12+ years of business, it has manufactured more than 1,500 unique flavors. Some of the most eye-catching include: Pear & Blue Cheese, Turkey Stuffing & Cranberry Sauce, Chocolate Potato Salad, and Don Bugito’s Creepy Crawly Critters that contained real bugs! Eek!
So what are you ordering during your first visit? We might have a hankering for the pastrami on rye! We’ll keep you posted on updates regarding the opening of the West Village shop, too, so worry not.
