How are our cabs doing? Well, there has been a 9% drop in taxi trips from this time last year, but don’t be too alarmed. According to data published by the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission our beloved yellow cabs are safe from services like Uber… for now.
The good news for NYC cabbies is that they currently service about twice as many customers than their biggest rivals, Uber drivers. In April there were an estimated 11.1 million taxi trips in New York City, that’s about 400,000 trips daily. Uber drivers performed an average of 44 trips per week, or six trips a day over a seven-day week. Taxi drivers, performed 91 trips per week, or 13 trips a day.
There are, however, dark clouds on the horizon for NYC cabbies. The numbers show that Uber has grown 121% in the last year (some 4.7 million fares). Could this mean that at some point in the future we will witness the extinction of Yellow Cabs?
